Business as usual (almost) at Kerrs Reach

Saturday morning's devastating earthquake in Christchurch has hit the rowing community with yet-to-be assessed, but almost certainly major damage to four clubs - Union, Avon, Canterbury and Christ's College - but key figures in the sport in Canterbury are inisting the show will go on, despite fears that rowing at Kerrs Reach could be halted for some time.

New Zealand’s rowing world champions (including FISA World Cup winners Rebecca Scown and Juliette Haigh above) are all set to come out in force for Hamilton’s Gallagher Great Race on September 5th to cheer on the home team from Waikato University.Four time world champion Mahé Drysdale and undisputed men’s pair world champion Eric Murray, as well as world champions and former Gallagher Great Race winners Duncan Grant, Olympic bronze medallist Nathan Twaddle, Rebecca Scown and Juliette Haigh and world champion lightweight double sculler Peter Taylor should all be out cheering their up and coming rowing colleagues on against Boat Race winners Cambridge University.

Karapiro 2010 Rowing Team Announced

After a week of intensive trials in wet conditions at Lake Karapiro, Rowing New Zealand has announced a large team of 18 boats and 55 athletes – including both a men’s eight and women’s eight – for its attack on the medals at the forthcoming World Rowing Championships, which will, of course, be held on the team’s home water between October 31st and November 7th.

Next stop for New Zealand – the world junior rowing championships

A total of 49 countries have entered teams to take part in the 2010 World Rowing Junior Championships Racice, near Prague, in the Czech Republic from 5 to 8 August. Among the 214 crews entered, 26 will race in the men's single sculls, and 25 in the men's quadruple sculls, two events with the highest number of entries at this regatta. In total, 677 athletes shall be present in Racice next week.

New Zealand's up and coming Under 23 girls rowed their way to two silver medals in Brest, Belarusia today, with the women's lightweight double scull of Julia Edward and Lucy Strack taking the runner up spot along with the women's eight on a solid but win-less day for New Zealand Rowing.Edward and Strack set the ball rolling for New Zealand with an inspirational silver medal to open the account and give a boost to the four crews that would race in finals later.

Under 23s ready to be part of something big

Participation is still on the rise for the world's under 23 rowers as over 880 athletes have confirmed participation in this month's World Rowing Under 23 Championships to take place in Brest, Belarus from 22 to 25 July. In total, 56 nations have entered along with New Zealand. In 2009, 830 athletes from 56 countries were present, making this year yet another record breaking entry since the event took on World Championship status back in 2005.

World champion Hamish Bond has been named the 2009 New Zealand university sportsperson of the year. Bond was announced as the overall winner at the Blues Awards ceremony in Wellington, emerging victorious from a field of finalists which also included netballer Laura Langman, rugby player Stephen Donald, cyclist Jaime Nielsen, surf lifesaver Nikki Cox and Paralympic swimmer Cameron Leslie.

It was a good regatta for New Zealand's athletes, with two wins and two seconds following Duncan Grant's Saturday silver.

The Brits led out, but in rough conditions the kiwis settled into a faster pace and dominated the second half. How hard the Brits were going in that part of the race is debatable, and the final tonight will show the crews' top pace.

We were shocked and saddened today to learn of the passing of Tyler Sherman. From Wanganui, Tyler was a Junior World Champion and a Maadi Cup winner with Hamilton Boys. Nilsson's Cambridge beat the odds - and Oxford

Cambridge University - coached by New Zealander Chris Nilsson, overturned the odds to beat Oxford by clear water and win the 156th Boat Race. The Light Blues, who raced from the Middlesex station after losing the toss, tasted victory on the Tideway for the first time since 2007 under the direction of Nilsson, who coached the Kiwi four to world gold in 2007.

Missing - Canterbury trestle and rowing shoes

The Canterbury Rowing Club has lost a trestle/dump at the South Island Rowing Championships in Twizel. The trestle is one of the large ones made by Wintech and unmistakeably CRC's. It has white material with the letters CRC printed in red. The club is hoping somebody arrived back at their club to find the trestle on their trailer.

Murray takes out Waipa Sports Award

An outstanding year for rower Eric Murray has seen him named Sportsperson of the Year at the 2009 Waipa Networks District Sports Awards.Sport Waikato Waipa district coordinator Janis Jeffers said the award highlighted the success Eric achieved this year both here and overseas. “Again this year our judges had a tough job, but you can’t overlook all that Eric has achieved,” said Janis.

The BKW Armadacup over the weekend once again provided rowing with one of its biggest spectacles and once again New Zealand's world champion sculler Mahé Drysdale prevailed in a record time in the specialist, extreme, event. Emma Twigg, meanwhile, completely dominated the women's race and also broke the record.

The countdown to the 2010 Rowing World Championships begins today (October 30th) and the first batch of Grandstand seats for the general public have been made available via Ticketek.The tickets went on sale as Cambridge - home to most of the ultra successful New Zealand elite rowing team - came out in force to cheer on their champions and help get the countdown to the first race on October 30th 2010 underway.

Bond joins Zookeepers team for Tour of Southland

In an attempt to take some time out of rowing whilst keeping his supreme fitness levels, Bond is spending hours each day in training for cycling's Tour of Southland after he joined the strong Zookeepers team.

Maeyens to face Drysdale in Wanganui

Following on from the success of last December’s inaugural Billy Webb Centennial Challenge, organisers of this year’s race have announced the participants for this year’s event. Wanganui District Councilor Philippa Baker-Hogan says that current and four-time world champion Mahe Drysdale has agreed to return to the mighty Whanganui River. She says Mahe’s opponent will come in the form of Belgian sculler Tim Maeyens, currently ranked 4th following the recent world championships.

Oxford University and the University of Waikato have been training hard in the build up to their big clash in Sunday’s Gallagher Great Race with the UK Boat Race winners spending most of their time training on Lake Karapiro with two kiwis in the boat – Olympic bronze medalist George Bridgewater in the seven seat and former world champion men’s eight coxswain Andy Hay – now sports editor at TVNZ – ‘guesting’ in the cox seat for the race.

BankLink confirms Rowing New Zealand sponsorship through until 2012

Rowing New Zealand and Principal Partner BankLink have announced an extension to their current agreement guaranteeing sponsorship until the end of the Olympic Games in London 2012. The partnership which began in 2006 includes sponsorship of Rowing New Zealand and the New Zealand National Rowing Championships.
